There are so many options in the market today that can make decision making harder for businesses and consumers. A key ingredient to making any business successful is knowledge. Here at Promo Car Care, we want car washes to really understand their products and offerings. So, we are writing this blog to really explain what a microfiber towels is, what the difference between a regular car terry towel and a microfiber towel is, why you should be drying your car with a microfiber towel, how to take care of your microfiber towels (for longevity purposes), and how they would benefit an express car wash. A microfiber towel is a towel made from extremely small fibers, usually consisting of a blend of polyester and polyamide. To scale just how small each fibre is in this towel, we’ve included a chart comparing common fabrics.

You’ll see just how small the strand is in this chart; it looks nearly invisible. But, why is this important? It makes the fabric more porous and has a sort of split makeup. This allows the fabric to actually hook onto and hold water and/or dirt, instead of moving it around like a regular towel would. It is able to wipe off bacteria, as well. They absorb water off of surfaces more easily, so they are the perfect car towel to use to dry off cars. It does not need any water or chemical agents to pick up dirt, grease or oil from surfaces, it can achieve results on its own in just one swipe. How? The fabric absorbs all of your liquids, and the little grooves within the fabric are able to catch any dirt, so cleaning solution is not needed.

How To Clean Microfiber Towels

One thing to take note of is that the microfiber towel has to be laundered often in order to ensure that its quality stays intact and that you’re being hygienic (this is great for car washes, read on to find out why). Machine-wash a full load of microfiber towels with cold water (never use hot water). Use a small amount of detergent per load (another cost-effective benefit to this towel). Make sure to use a fragrance-free and additive-free detergent. Before drying your towel load, make sure to empty out the dryer lint trap, and set the dryer to a low-no heat setting. Make sure to never add any fabric softeners or scented products into the washer or dryer.

Benefits of Microfiber Towels for Express Car Washes

Imagine going through an express exterior car wash and arriving at the end, just to be offered use of a vacuum and microfiber towel at the end of your wash. Of course you take the offering, and park in the vacuum area to clean up the inside of your car and/or dry your car off with a microfiber towel before throwing it into a ‘Used Bin’. Now that you’ve put yourself into the shoes of your customers, you can see how nice the microfiber towel offering would be for your clientele. Being able to give your car a nice dry and pick up any other dirt (on the inside, mainly) after a wash is a great way to build a loyal customer base.

Not only do they get the option to dry off their car, but the new consumer appreciates an environmentally-friendly offering. Nielson’s The Sustainability Imperative (2015) found that 66% of consumers were more willing to pay higher prices for sustainable brands. This information can be used to the car washes advantage by showcasing how their microfiber towel offering is an eco-friendly alternative to other options (like paper towel rolls or other towels that have a shorter lifespan). This ‘green’ value add is also an incentive to prefer your car wash over others.

A huge benefit to adding the microfiber towel offering to the end of a car wash is that it is a reusable value add that is low-cost in the long term. Once the initial cost of buying the towels is done, you can wash them for reuse. Each towel (if taken care of in the correct manner, as described above) has about 500 washes before it is no longer in its best shape, more than the average towel.
